how to prevent mistakes in pop-ups

Pop-up ads are a great way to inform your client about new sales offer or a discount. They are good for advertising your products and interesting news. Creating a good pop-up can improve your sales. It can also make the clients more engaged in your content.

There’s also a possibility that your pop-ups would cause much frustration in your clients and directly influence their decision in not making a purchase – or even immediately leaving the site. There are some tricky issues with proper pop-up setup, which can’t be overlooked. That’s especially relevant when it comes to pop-ups appearing on mobiles. Always test your pop-ups on smartphones! They can disrupt good experience with your website and successfully discourage clients from making a purchase. These mistakes can also cause drop in your visibility rankings, so it’s best to be careful.

Even the most beautiful and useful pop-up needs to be tested on other devices. They can appear differently even if they were designed responsively. The mistakes that can appear on mobile pop-ups are:

Pop-ups appearing immediately after opening the site

Your client has reached your site. You know nothing about his/hers behavior and desires. Instead of being offered freedom to explore your website, he’s greeted with the pop-up, which might be irrelevant to him at the moment. Lets assume you’re also using notifications and your site is informing new users of GDPR compliant. That’s three pop-up windows your prospect needs to close to even see your website. How many times you just left the website, frustrated, when you saw something similar? Me, more than once. Don’t let that happen to your online shop.

Set up pop-ups to appear only after the user spent some time on the site. Prompt the pop-up when he/she enters a specific site, indicating interest in your products. Gather info about the user and present him with the content he actually might care about.

Pop-ups that take up all visible space

That’s a major no-no on mobiles. Unless you’re requesting the age or appropriate consent from your viewers, when it’s understandable that you want to actually hide your content from underage users – shrink your pop-ups. Make them at most ⅓ of the screen, and make sure that they don’t hide any content on your site. Offer large enough button to close it, if needed. No-one wants to be interrupted while browsing with a whole screen ad.

Pop-ups that won’t close

Sometimes the pop-up can be non-responsive and appear too big on the mobile screen. The closing button is too high and can’t be reached on mobiles. This button can be also hard to hit because of its size, or be completely unclickable. That’s why testing pop-ups is so important. You can easily prevent those situations.

Pop-ups that are not designed for mobile / are not responsive

Another mistake which happens often is ads that just don’t look well. The text is partly missing, the pictures are half cut. It just didn’t scale down from the PC version as it should. Users can see that something is not working on your site. They can assume that your site is broken and untrustowrthy, and just leave.

Be sure that your pop-ups don’t fall into those categories. Correct any mistakes you might find. That will directly influence not only your rankings, but also your sales.
